RAC UK Breakdown cover:

When it comes to UK breakdown cover, the last thing that you want is to feel unprepared for the worst. RAC offer a range of different services to help you to be secure in the event of a breakdown, but which is the right service for your individual needs? Keep reading for advice about each of the options open to you to help you to make an informed decision as to the most appropriate car breakdown cover UK.

Types of cover

One of the first decisions what you will need to make when taking out your UK breakdown cover from the RAC, is the actual type of cover that you need. The decision that you will be faced with relates to whether your car is protected or you. Let’s consider the difference between the two.

The last thing that you want after an accident or breakdown is to be sat at the roadside for hours, waiting for the nearest patrol van to reach you to help. RAC’s promise to aim to reach you within 40 minutes of your phone call is a nice reassurance then, as are the figures that demonstrate that in recent years they have managed to fix an average of 4 out of 5 vehicles actually by the side of the road.

Personal cover means that no matter what car you are in, if it breaks down, the RAC will be there to help. If you often receive lifts from other people or if you change your vehicle a lot this could be the cover for you. You won’t need to phone up every time you climb into a different car, instead you’ll know that you are covered wherever you may be. Personal UK breakdown cover does tend to be more expensive than vehicle cover however.

The usually cheaper option, vehicle cover, means that you will only be covered for breakdowns in the particular car stated on the policy. This could be fine if you usually find yourself in the same vehicle, though there are occasionally restrictions in force depending on the age of the car. You will also not be able to upgrade a vehicle policy to include European cover.

Additional cover

Along with the standard roadside assistance provided with all RAC policies, which will involve the fixing or towing of your car so long as you are more than ¼ of a mile away from your home, you will have the option to upgrade your policy with any, or several, of the following:

  • At Home cover means that the RAC will come to your doorstep if your car won’t start in a morning, or if you’re just down the road from your house when it breaks down.
  • Recovery cover will allow you to be taken to any destination if your car can’t be fixed by the roadside, rather than the 10 miles to the nearest garage offered by the standard Roadside policy.
  • Onward Travel can only be taken advantage of if you also select the option of Recovery, and will cover any travel costs to get where you are going, or even the hire of another vehicle for a maximum of 3 days.
  • European Breakdown cover speaks for itself, if your car stops working anywhere in Europe you will still have somebody to phone.

No matter which cover you select you can be assured of the excellent service of the RAC who fix, on average, 4 out of 5 of cars at the roadside. And with great savings to be found when buying online, there’s no reason not to sign up.
